How vehicle recalls work

A vehicle recall is a formal campaign, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in which a manufacturer (or NHTSA itself) determines that a vehicle or item of equipment has a safety defect or fails a federal safety standard. Each campaign gets an official number, and the manufacturer must notify owners and provide a remedy — typically a free repair, replacement, or refund.

Recalls are filed at the model level, so a recall page here lists every campaign on record for that year, make, and model. Whether a specific vehicle is included can depend on where and when it was built — the campaign text states those limits, and the manufacturer or NHTSA’s VIN lookup gives the definitive answer for an individual vehicle. Every recall page on this site links to the official record. You can read more about where this data comes from on our data sources & methodology page.
